In a recent switch from i386 to amd64, I having a problem with the
onboard audio, an Asus M3N78-VM board with VT1708B HDA 8-channel codec.

It works perfectly in i386 but fails on the same kernel source in amd64:

I've included the dmesg outputs below. The i386 verbose boot overfilled
the message buffer, so I've shown the complete non-verbose boot and all
that was available after a verbose boot. The only difference between
the two in terms of hardware is I had 8 GB RAM installed for amd64 but
only 4GB when I booted in i386.

Any help would be appreciated!

I have already seen such reports few times, but nobody yet reported
about platform specifics of this. I think it is not codec, but a HDA
controller related issue. In your case problem only appears with
on-board NVidia controller, but not with external ATI one.

Could you boot with `hw.snd.verbose=4` to get maximum driver debugging.
I am especially interested in first hdac0 related messages. There is
some sort of CPU cache coherency/DMA management magic used, which looks
suspicious to me. Also some people report about such problems with
NVidia HDA controllers when MSI interrupts enabled, but it is probably
not your case, as snd_hda does not uses MSI by default on RELENG_7.

I was wondering if you received my message and if you had any further
insights. I recently csup'd again and am attaching the newest output.
Although xmms2 is nice (I'm using a windows box as the server), it's
really annoying not to have native sound working in amd64. Remember,
it works just fine if I boot up i386.

sc->support_64bit = HDA_FLAG_MATCH(gcap, HDAC_GCAP_64OK);
line to
sc->support_64bit = 0;
, to strictly limit driver to 32bit addresses ignoring hardware
capabilities.

That defeats the whole point of using amd64 and was the reason I left i386.
Or did you want me to try this as just a diagnostic step?

I did this to sys/dev/sound/pci/hda/hdac.c and it didn't help. I added a
printf immediately afterward so I was sure I was loading the right module.

changes but I understand little of how the (relatively) new HDA subsystem
works.

I did try this but the same result and dmesg (well except for memory
size). I also tried tweaking various BIOS settings. Here are my choices:

AZALIA AUDIO: [Disabled], [Internal codec], [External codec], or
[Internal codec + External codec]
Front Panel Select: [AC97] or [HD Audio]
SPDIF Mode Setting: [HDMI Output] or [SPDIF Output]

Obviously toggling the second two did absolutely nothing. Without the
external codec, the following lines disappear:

hdac0: Probing codec #0...
hdac0: hdac_command_send_internal: TIMEOUT numcmd=1, sent=1, received=0
hdac0: hdac_command_send_internal: TIMEOUT numcmd=1, sent=1, received=0
hdac0: Codec #0 is not responding! Probing aborted.

Without the internal codec, the following lines disappear:

hdac0: hdac_command_send_internal: TIMEOUT numcmd=1, sent=1, received=0

Exactly what I would expect, but it was worth a shot. I can dual boot
either i386 or amd64 (both RELENG_7) if you have some other test or debug
code you want me to add. Remember that it works perfectly in i386. I'm
only keeping the i386 disk around to help fix this issue. If you've
completely run out of ideas, let me know so I can turn that disk back
into a mirror.

I tried this as well, no luck.

I can dual-boot this system into either i386 or amd64. Do you (or anyone
else) have any suggestions? I'm willing to patch my kernels (I'm following
7-stable) but I have no idea where to start. I would appreciate it if
somebody would give me some direction here.

Hmm, I looked at the place that queries support_64bit, in hdac_dma_alloc as
part of the lowaddr to the bus_dma_tag_create(9) call:

...

On a whim, I tried manually setting lowaddr to BUS_SPACE_MAXADDR_24BIT and
it worked! A binary search revealed that it breaks for me when
lowaddr > 0x7FFFFFFF ... perhaps a 32-bit overflow bug related to DMA?

Out of curiosity, how come this same test (for support_64bit) isn't needed
before the bus_dma_tag_create() in hdac_attach?

The hdac_attach doesn't directly allocate any DMA memory at all, instead it
calls hdac_dma_alloc to perform this task. The support_64bit variable gets
setted up in hdac_get_capabilities just before calling DMA allocation functions
that needs it.

may be it help. Change first arguments of bus_dma_tag_create() calls
from NULL to bus_get_dma_tag(sc->dev). May be some parent bus will be
able to announce 32bit limitation correctly without need to specify it.

Sure, this is what I volunteered for initially. I just didn't know enough
of the bus/DMA stuff which is why I asked for direction.

Hmm, good idea, but it didn't work. I'm willing to try anything else, but
I've dumped the i386 partition (so I can only test in amd64 now).

It took a bit of persuasion since the patch didn't apply cleanly to
RELENG_7, but it works for me. Will this be MFC'd?

I was wondering if you received my message and if you had any further
insights. I recently csup'd again and am attaching the newest output.
Although xmms2 is nice (I'm using a windows box as the server), it's
really annoying not to have native sound working in amd64. Remember,
it works just fine if I boot up i386.

Could you boot with `hw.snd.verbose=4` to get maximum driver debugging.
Including below, minus the lines related to the ATI card; I only care
about the onboard audio (hdac0). See below for dmesg with
hw.snd.verbose=4.
